Iceland Luggage Lockers, Releasing Weight before Hiking

At Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, Luggage Lockers (a private company) provides the convenient locker service.

Before going hiking, you can store your luggages and bags there first, releasing yourself from unnecessary weight

In this article, I'm going to introduce Luggage Lockers as a helper for hiking.

Iceland Luggage Lockers

Luggage Lockers is a private brand of the locker service in Iceland.

It has 6 locations in total at Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik.

I chose to use the locker of Traðarkot Car Park in the end in the consideration of the bus stop for hiking.

The car park was only 10-min walk from the bus stop that TREX's bus (to Landmannalaugar, the start of Laugavegur trail) stopped.

So I could deposit my luggage at 7:00, and walk to Bus Stop #1 before 7:30 to take TREX.

How to use Iceland Luggage Lockers

Location of Lockers at Traðarkot Car Park

The address of Traðarkot Car Park is "Traðarkot Car Park, Hverfisgata 20, 101 Reykjavik".

It is a parking building, and the Luggage Lockers are at B1 and B2.

However, it's a bit hard to find the exact location: The entrance of the lockers is located outside and on the right-hand side of the building when you face it.

Luggage Lockers posts the video of the route on its website. Need not to worry!

Actually I think when you navigate, you can choose Punk, a place near the car park as the destination. It will be clearer.

Iceland Luggage Lockers Open Hours

Luggage Lockers at the car park operates from 7:00 to 24:00.

Based on my experience, the entrance did open at 7:00, so you don't have to worry "it doesn't open on time, so I cannot catch my bus", things like that.

Iceland Luggage Lockers Sizes and Price

There are 3 sizes and 52 lockers at Traðarkot Car Park, located at B1 and B2.

(Below you will find the locker interface and how they look like.)

  • XL:W 64 x H 57 x D 95 cm / 2990 isk
  • L:W 64 x H 42 x D 95 cm / 1990 isk
  • M:W 47 x H 37 x D 68 cm / 990 isk

You can refer to the pictures and the video on its website.

I used a locker of size L, where my luggage fit the depth and the width of the locker; there were some more space above, where I could have store another bag.

The maximum storage time of the lockers at the car park is 30 days (April, 2024).

Be reminded that different locations share different max. storage time.

Iceland Luggage Lockers Instructions

Let me tell you how to be prepared of storing the luggages at Luggage Lockers for hiking.

Preparation

  • Before departure, measure the sizes of your luggages. See if Luggage Lockers fit your needs.
  • When you arrive at Reykjavik, DO visit the location (the car park, for example), and walk from the lockers to the bus stop, to ensure the route and time.
  • Check out the storage statusDeposit in advance to "reserve" the locker if needed.
    • Mind the max. storage time (yet the system will time again after you open the locker).
    • While referring to the pictures below, you can see that XL lockers had high demand. If your have BIG luggages, ... you'll have to train yourself to lift your luggages. : < No, I'm kidding.
  • Just in case that all lockers are occupied, as a plan B, DO ask your hotel in advance if they can help you with the storage. Or check the other Luggage Lockers on spot.

Steps of Depositing Luggages

  • Choose an available and feasible-sized locker. Press the locker on the interface and put in your luggages.
  • Keep on manipulating the interface, and make sure you have your card (and phone) in your hands.
  • Pay with card for the basic fee. (The fee for the first 24 hr. It's 1990 isk for size L.) Close the locker.
    • When the locker is closed, it is locked, too. But it'll be shown as "occupied" only after you pay the fee.
      • Actually the 2 actions ("close the locker" and "pay with card") didn't work together. I think it would have been better if the system only had locked the locker after the fee had been paid.
  • Get the receipt with your password. Better take a photo of it in case you lost the paper.
  • If it is for "reservation", I'd recommend to leave a note in the locker, stating the reservation, "things will be deposit later", your name and your phone number.
    • I read it somewhere that the manager might clean up empty lockers to release the usage, so leaving a note would be better.

Steps of Taking out Luggages

  • Use the interface, choose your locker, key in the password, and pay. (the 2nd charge, for the fee after the 2nd day.)
  • After the payment the locker will be open. Now you can get your stuff.

Q&A: Can I reserve Luggage Lockers in Iceland?

  • Luggage Lockers cannot be reserve. So the only way is to use the locker in advance, reserving by $ and time. Remember to leave a note in the locker as mentioned above.

Q&A: Things be aware of when using Luggage Lockers in Iceland?

  • If you approach the lockers via the locker entrance, then there are only stairs and no elevator. You have to hand-carry your luggages. (Same as staying in an apartment in Iceland... More muscle training!)
  • If your luggages are heavy, choose a lower locker, even if that means you have to go down one more story.
    • Do not reserve a locker that is too high where you cannot lift your luggages.
  • Payment is only available by credit cards. Make sure to keep your cards in hand.
  • If you open the locker, store something and lock up again, a new fee will be charged, since the timing is interrupted.
  • I strongly advice to get a SIM card with the phone function in Iceland. I personally used the phone for not just the locker but also the apartment.

Customer Service of Iceland Luggage Lockers Literally Saved Me

One of the reasons that I write this article of "lockers", is because I saw a hiker carrying all her traveling stuff on Laugavegur trail (Ouch, so heavy!!)

Another reason is because the customer service of Luggage Lockers was amazing. They really saved me! So I want to recommend the service.

.

On the first day of my Laugavegur trail, an extremely stupid thing happened to me (which was quite normal for myself however.)

I had been careful for the preparation.

I even asked the apartment that I stayed if I could deposit my luggage there as plan B.

Yet, when I was about to go hiking, a deadly mistake happened!

I think it was the consequence of not entirely sobering. (still sleepy..?)

What happened actually?

.

I "reserved" the locker in advance. So on the day to go hiking, I had to "open the locker first and then store my luggage".

However, when I put everything inside the locker, I closed it up. That was tragedy.

Because MY CARD WAS IN THE LOCKER, TOO! 🤦‍♀️

I flipped my small bag and dropped everything on the ground, like some movie scene. Well, no cards!

But right then, the charge was not done yet. It means I was stuck in the status that "I stored something, but nobody knows that the locker is occupied!!"

Really, isn't it a bug for the system?!

If I had just walked away, my stuff would have probably gone?!

Time was ticking out. 25 min left for me to catch the bus... "Am I going to give up my 4-day dream hiking because of my stupidity?"

LUCKILY, I got my phone in my hand. (and I could make calls with it!!)

I first called my sister and her husband who shared a different schedule from then on.

Well, they were on the high way already : ) So fast. And not helpful AT ALL.

Then, with teeny-tiny hope, I called the customer service written on the lockers.

I thought, "who's gonna answer... it is bloody 7 in the morning... "

Unexpectedly, the phone got through shortly!

.

The staff first listened to my stupidity. Then he monitored remotely and opened my locker for me!!! He's AN ANGEL!!

I told him straight away that he saved my life.

With little time left, I picked up necessary stuff, quivering.

Confirmed twice that I got my card and my phone...

And completed the storage, finally. (So tired.)

With this huge relief, I embarked on my ultralight journey!

.

The most critical point was that "the customer service did serve on time at 7 and saved me". This is the reason that I recommend Luggage Lockers.

They were dedicated to their jobs and professional!
